Feather shuttlecocks are made from authentic goose and duck feathers (16 feathers per shuttlecock). There are differences in the materials used for both the feathers and the corks.

Environmental conditions—such as hot, cold, humid, or dry air—affect the durability and flight trajectory of the shuttlecock. The speed of a feather shuttlecock is indicated by a number, which depends on its weight. The most common speed used in Finland is 78. A slower speed, 77, is typically used in hot and humid conditions.

The finest first-class tournament shuttlecocks—approved for international BWF (Badminton World Federation) competitions—are made of premium goose feathers. These shuttlecocks undergo a meticulous, multi-stage manufacturing process where only the very best feathers are selected and sorted to match perfectly in both shape and size. In the final stage, each shuttlecock's flight trajectory is strictly tested to ensure that the shuttlecocks in every tube are as identical as possible.

Shuttlecocks keep well in normal room conditions for a few months.

The best place to store shuttlecocks is in a humid environment. They should not be stored in cold conditions, and especially not in freezing temperatures. The ideal humidity level is around 80–90%. In freezing air, the feathers begin to dry out, making the natural feathers much more brittle. This causes them to break easily, especially on off-center hits. Cold and dry winter weather reduces the durability of the shuttlecocks (for example, avoid storing them in a cold car).

You can gently rehydrate the shuttlecocks by, for instance, steaming the shuttlecock tube. However, be careful not to over-humidify them.

In the summer, the warm and humid air binds moisture to the shuttlecocks, making them slightly heavier (and therefore faster), but their durability is often better.
